05.30.10 ♥ 2Building the Big Society
Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg have introduced a Cabinet Office paper called Building the Big Society, which sets out proposals to
- give communities more powers
- encourage people to take an active role in their communities
- transfer power from central to local government
- support co-ops, mutuals, charities and social enterprises
- publish government data.
Big Society Network
The Big Society Network is an organisation created “to help everyone achieve change in their local area”.
Launched in March by Comic Relief’s Paul Twivy and Nat Wei, now Baron Wei of Shoreditch, the Prime Minister’s ‘Big Society’ adviser, its stated aim is “to not only create the largest co-operative or mutual in Britain, but to create a mutual that is Britain. Every citizen can be a shareholder, contribute, receive help and rewards.”
The Network will be a “toolbox of advice, case shitories, links to people and resources, using the power of the Internet, mobiles and face-to-face action.”

we should all be aspiring to the cutting edge design of projects like catch 22. I believe inclusion and credibility have a close relationship and I am confident they have nailed it with their client group.

06.16.10The Government has announced its intention to remodel the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) back to “proportionate, commonsense levels”. As a result, the ISA-registration stage of the scheme has been stopped and will not launch on 26 July 2010 as planned.
The full details and scope of this remodel are still to be finalised. However the ISA e-newsletter outlines details of the announcement, what aspects have been halted and which aspects continue and how to use the new CRB forms.
The Government has announced that there will be a review. We used the Vetting and Barring workshop at NAVCA’s Chief Officer’s Residential Event, to gather queries, concerns and ideas for a remodelled system. NAVCA members can send any further issues or ideas to Peter Horner.
NAVCA members can also contact Peter if this announcement has caused concern or with issues that they would like to be clarified.
Why Ex-Offenders?
* One in four men and one in nine women have a criminal conviction of some kind by the time they are 24 years old. It is likely therefore that you will meet ex-offenders who wish to volunteer.
* The social inclusion agenda places a moral (and often funding) incentive on us to go the extra mile in engaging with people who tend to marginalised
* Volunteering is likely to be seen as a way to improve the job prospects of ex-offenders by building their work place skills, their confidence and giving them a reference.
